At Waterville, we believe that music is an essential part of a child’s education. Research has shown that music impacts a child’s physical, mental and emotional health.

Music:

  • reduces anxiety and stress;

  • promotes a positive mood;

  • encourages bonding and connections;

  • can improve memory and cognition.

Our music curriculum is underpinned by singing – something in which every child can be successful and something all of our children love to do. Singing is a great starting point for musical learning and aids the development of many skills from boosting self-confidence to improving language and communication skills.

Through our curriculum, children also learn skills, knowledge and understanding which help them become confident performers, composers and listeners. Children are introduced to music from all around the world and across many generations (from classical baroque to 90s Singer/Songwriters) teaching children to respect and appreciate the music of all traditions and cultures.

Music develops transferable skills which complement our school RESPECT values – resilience, empathy, self-awareness, positivity, communication and team work - which will benefit our children throughout their school career and for the rest of their lives.
